District News

May 4, 2017

Dear Orchard View Parents,

Yesterday we reported to high school parents that two bullets and three casings were found in the high school cafeteria. We immediately contacted police. We now know a student found the bullets and casings, brought them to school, and left them on the cafeteria table. Shortly thereafter, students discovered them and alerted staff.

Muskegon Township Police and school officials determined that at no time was there a weapon involved, or a credible threat to students or staff in our high school, or at any other building. This morning, I met with Township Police officials and we decided to have an additional resource officer present at the high school to begin the day.

First thing this morning, Principal Dan Bolhuis met with all high school students to discuss the events of yesterday. He explained that rumors circulated on social media regarding safety threats were completely unfounded. He asked that students refrain from spreading further rumors.

If your child is expressing concerns, please encourage them to reach out to one of our counseling staff. Please contact my office if you have further questions.

Sincerely,

Jim Nielsen, Superintendent

Helping Children Cope with Loss, Death and Grief

It is with a great deal of sadness...

It is with a great deal of sadness we share news regarding the passing of a Cardinal Elementary staff member. On Friday, April 7th, Tammy Briggs died unexpectedly from a suspected brain aneurysm.  Tammy has been teaching fourth grade at Cardinal Elementary for the past few years.   Prior to that, she taught for several years at OVEE and Orchard View Elementary.  Please keep Tammy’s mom, Carolyn, and her daughter, Katelyn, in your thoughts during this difficult time.
