Fall 2017

Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Community Members:

I am excited to welcome you back to what promises to be an exciting and productive 2017-2018 school year. Classes begin on Tuesday September 5th for all students.

Even though summer is beginning to wind down, it still feels almost too soon to be writing a “Welcome Back” letter to the Orchard View Community. Over the summer we have been busy!  Our second year of the Summer Acceleration program included two sessions and place based learning at the Lakeshore Museum, LST 393 ship, Hackley Library and Gillette Nature Center. We welcomed many new additions to an already accomplished staff, including our grant-funded Systems of Care staff, to provide much needed support to our families.  While we have been busy preparing for a great start, I truly hope your summer vacation leaves both students and parents rejuvenated and ready for the start of a new year at Orchard View!

During the past several months a lot of hard work has gone into revising our school calendar for the 2017-18 school year. I want to thank the OVEA and OVMESPA for their help in creating a calendar that meets the needs of our children, while satisfying the requirements of the Michigan Department of Education. We will again have a series of “Early Release” days that take place between September and March which will be utilized for Staff Professional Development as well as Parent-Teacher Conferences. I appreciate your understanding and support as we continue to look at a school calendar that best meets the needs of students, staff professional development, and parent communication.

As always thank you for being a wonderful community that continues to take pride in the school district and the students who attend Orchard View. I want to wish each of you a wonderful school year filled with great educational experiences and I look forward to seeing all of our children prepared for future success through the educational opportunities to Discover, Learn, and Succeed provided by the exceptional and caring staff at Orchard View Schools.

If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions regarding the upcoming school year at Orchard View, please feel free to contact me. We are always looking to improve our communication with the Orchard View Community and are open to your comments and suggestions.

Sincerely,

J Nielsen sig

Jim Nielsen, Superintendent
